JAMES RICHARD BOESCH, age 89, of Montgomery, died on Thursday, July 3, 2025, surrounded by his family at Mayo Clinic Health Care System in Mankato.
Born on June 1, 1936, in Madelia, MN, he was the son of Richard and Olinda (Karau) Boesch. Jim grew up mostly in Amboy where he received his education at the Amboy Public School until age 14 when his dad passed away and he then ran the family farm. On February 24, 1962, he was united in marriage to Marian Louise Pierce at the Catholic church in Winnebago, MN. They lived in Truman for a few years before moving to Waterville for a short time and then eventually building a home in Montgomery, MN where he lived until his death.
He was drafted into the Army and was stationed in Panama from 1960 to 1962; where he learned excavation, road construction, and how to repair large machinery. He spent his entire career in this area; and was the foreman for two different companies until his retirement in 2001.
Jim loved wildlife of all kinds, especially deer and birds. He spent every deer hunting season in Cramer with his brothers, nephew, cousins, second cousins, and friends. He loved growing pumpkins and Indian corn for the grandkids, having “Harvest Day” in the Fall to pick it all, followed by a fire to roast hot dogs and marshmallows. He loved flowers, planting trees, cooking, watching storms roll in, driving around looking for deer to watch, and he had a wry sense of humor. His favorite times were spent with grandkids and great grandkids.
James is survived by his wife, Marian (Pierce) Boesch of Montgomery; his children: Lisa (Brian) Berdan of Montgomery, Lori (Robert) Stein of Walker, MN, and Travis (Jatona) Boesch of Elk River, MN; grandchildren: Nathan (Monica) Stein, Matthew (Amanda) Stein, Nicole (Mitch) Foley, Brittany (Hunter) Lewis, Autumn Stein, Shawna Berdan, Gabrielle Boesch, Traci Boesch, Niya Staul, and Aliya Staul; siblings: Kathy (Garland) Hendricksen and Juleen Gollwitzer; sister-in-law: Linda Boesch; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son David Boesch; sisters and brothers Arlys (Luverne) Halverson, Lois (Richard) Dethloft, Merlyn (Jeanne) Boesch, and Thomas Boesch; grandchild Nora Boesch; great grandchild Lily Lewis; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Luverne Halverson, Richard Dethloft, Jeanne Boesch, and Herman Gollwitzer.
