LARRY DEAN BERNINGHAUS, age 87, of Montgomery passed away peacefully. at his home surrounded by family on Friday, May 30, 2025.
Born on July 23, 1937, in West Bend, Iowa, Larry was the son of Edwin and Eleanor (Zinnel) Berninghaus. He grew up working and playing on the family farm, where he developed a lifelong love of the land. A talented athlete, Larry was active in football, baseball, and basketball during his years at West Bend High School.
After graduating, Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Iowa, where he met the love of his life, Lucinda “Cindy” Mogler. They were married on November 8, 1959, in West Bend and began their life together in Shakopee before settling on a small farm in Montgomery—a place they would call home for decades.
Larry had a deep love for the outdoors and simple pleasures. He was happiest farming, training horses, raising Boston Terriers, tending his large, well-kept yard, and spending time fishing. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Montgomery.
He is survived by his children, Lori Berninghaus Kroells (John Peters), Lyle Berninghaus, Lee Berninghaus (Molly O’Neil); eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Dennis (Pam) Berninghaus of Savage; and sister, Gail Novak of Le Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cindy; mother, Eleanor; and father, Edwin.
A private burial has taken place at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Montgomery. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 20 from 1:00 – 4:00pm at his farm.
