Michael "Mick" Patrick McGuire

Michael "Mick" Patrick McGuire, age 73, of Montgomery passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Mick was born on September 7,1952 to Michael E. and Eleanor (Weydert) McGuire in Le Sueur, MN. When Mick was 3 years old his family moved to Montgomery, MN, a community he loved and served for the remainder of his life.

Mick attended Holy Redeemer School and graduated from Montgomery-Lonsdale High School with the class of 1971. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy from the University of Minnesota.

In 1971 Mick met the love of his life, Joni Novak, and together they shared 55 years of love, companionship and adventure. They especially enjoyed traveling and explored much of this beautiful world together. Throughout Mick’s health challenges, Joni was a devoted and ever-present care giver.

At a young age Mick developed a strong appreciation for all things outdoors. He enjoyed his time on his grandfather and uncles’ farms and his many camping trips with family and friends. His hobbies included sailing, biking, hiking, canoeing and downhill and cross-country skiing. Mick was also an accomplished woodworker with his masterpiece being a beautiful cedar canoe. Mick’s lasting love of the beauty in nature eventually developed into a talent for landscaping.

In 1987 Mick started McGuire Landscaping with his brother, Dan. He was active in the business for the next 39 years and although he slowed down he never officially retired.

Family was very important to Mick. He was a devoted brother, a much loved “Uncle Mick” and a favorite cousin. Mick never missed a family reunion. He had a ready smile, a twinkle in his eyes and a way of making each person know how special they were in his life.

Mick had many cherished friends. They were a very important part of his life. Mick loved nothing more than a good, long visit with friends and family.

Mick was proud of his Irish heritage and found joy in his many trips to Ireland. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and a board member of the Friends of Jessenland History and Cultural Center and will be buried in the St. Thomas Cemetery in Jessenland Township where his Irish immigrant ancestors are buried.

Mick was devoted to the town of Montgomery. Mick was the Mayor of Montgomery for 10 years and a city council member for 19 years from 1993-2010 and again from 2015 until his death. In 2023 he was honored to be chosen as the Kolacky Days Grand Marshal. Mick was instrumental in the Kolacky Day Tour de Bun for 35 years. He was active in the Montgomery Area Community Club, the Montgomery Historical Society, a supporter of the Montgomery Arts and Heritage Center and a board member of the Aging Services. Mick also served as an EMT for the Montgomery Ambulance for 30 years. Two of his proudest accomplishments were his help in facilitating the addition of our wonderful city library and the formation of The Montgomery Community Foundation where he served as president from its inception in 2018 until his death. Outside of the community Mick was active in the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association and spent many years on their Government Affairs Committee. Mick was an active member of the LeSueur county DFL Party and a board member of the Ney Nature Center for 12 years.

Survived by life partner, Joni Novak; brothers, Pat (Roxy) McGuire, Dan (Marina) McGuire, Brian McGuire; sisters, Colleen (Ted) Wondra, Sue (Dave) Gregor, Maureen (Jeff) Franek; stepmother, Ramona McGuire; The Novak family, many loved nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation for Mick will be from 4 - 7 PM on Monday, August 24, 2026 at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery. A private family burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery in Jessenland Township at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Montgomery Community Foundation.
