Born on September 22, 1943, in New Hampton, Iowa, he was the son of Calvin Charles and Helen LaVere (Treloar) Smith. Tom grew up in Fredericksburg, Iowa where he received his education, graduating with the class of 1961. On September 1, 1963, Tom was united in marriage to Donna Lea Hadley at Peace United Church in Fredericksburg. Together they lived for a few years in Geneseo, Illinois before making their home in Muscatine, Iowa, while raising their three children. Together they shared 55 years of marriage before Donna passed away on June 21, 2019.

Tom worked in the grocery business his entire career, first owning and operating grocery stores in Illinois and Iowa and later worked as the Meat Department Manager for Walmart until his retirement in 2016. In retirement, Tom and Donna moved to Le Center, where he stayed busy driving his grandchildren to and from work four days a week until his health no longer allowed.

Tom was an avid Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball Fan and was proud to be a member of the Dodgers Group Chat on X. He religiously followed the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams, college softball and anything else relating to his grandkids and great grandson’s activities. Tom was a man of great faith and conservative values. As a child he attended the Brethren Church in Fredericksburg, raised his family at the Musserville United Methodist Church in Muscatine, and later in life he attended Hilcrest Baptist-Brethren Church in Fredericksburg where he son, Scott, preaches.

Tom is survived by his children: Scott (Angela) Smith of Fredericksburg, IA, Tim (Megan) Smith of Johnston, Iowa, and Susy (Keith) Swaggert of Le Center; grandchildren: Morgan Herda, Austin Roemhildt-Herda, Reagan (Jared) Cook, Madison Roemhildt-Herda, Cooper Smith and Jackson Smith; great grandchildren, Calvin Cook, Taytum and Colson Dochniak; siblings: Jack Smith and Mary King both of Fredericksburg, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Rita Hadley and Sue Hadley; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
